May 2011 Awareness Month: Asthma

May is the official month of asthma and allergy awareness. Here are a few of the activities and events.

– Managing your child’s asthma while he or she is at school is a challenge. Enter the Everyone Breathe Asthma Education Grants program, courtesy of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America in partnership with corporate sponsors. Parents of children with asthma are invited to apply to win a $2,500 savings bond for their child’s continued education and a $5,000 grant for their child’s school to help improve the quality of asthma care and educate students about the respiratory illness. Available only to residents of the U.S.; deadline for submission is July 29. Learn more and enter here.

– May 3 was World Asthma Day. In the U.S. and Canada, events were held coast to coast. For example, in Canada, asthma clinics were offered at more than 270 Walmart stores.

The Asthma Society of Canada also used May 3 to launch its Allergies Count Too Now! program, an expansion of its helpline service, which can now be accessed by anyone with questions about asthma or associated respiratory allergies. Certified Asthma/Respiratory Educators are available to answer questions at 1-866-787-4050 or by e-mailing info@asthma.ca.
