Talking Allergies

Hi Susie Q. Just wanted to send a post to welcome you. I joined this board in August and have not visited too much since. I was overwhelmed with fear for my son's life.

As careful as we are, which is very careful, we had a visit to the hospital last week. My son was at his grandmother's with my husband. He had his food with him but my husband put it on a clean? plate to serve it to him. He vomited for over four hours. We are still not sure if he got a trace of peanut from somewhere or not but they are treating it as an allergic reaction. I rushed him to the hospital and gave him his epi-pen for the first time.

My point is this. I was paralyzed with fear about this. Still am on most days. I wish to God it was me instead of him. My fear made me absolutely sick 24/7. At some point, we have to let go of some of it. If not, then what is the point? It will drive you crazy. Having said that, mine is still with me most of the time. I am trying, though. I wish you luck. It would be nice to be all upbeat and positive wouldn't it? But sometimes you have to feel the sadness and wallow in it a little bit, until you are ready.

I really feel for you. I want you to know that someone out there cares about you, and has some small idea of how scared you are. I hope that you and I both someday, can let some of it go. Sounds like you are, as much as you can. I'm glad you made it to the wedding.

SuzieQ. So glad you were able to make it to your son's wedding.

I am anaphylactic to fish... even the smell of it. It was confirmed almost 5 years ago when I had a reaction that almost took my life. Since then, I had 2 other reactions, but less severe due to the limited exposure (less than 1/2 a breath! but still got some reaction!)

I too have to live with the fear everyday, but I have learned that no matter how paranoid I am, mistakes can still happen... the stress level varies depending on the days and where I go... It's not like any other stress that other talk about, because I live everyday with the fear of not seeing another day...

I'd heard about the betablocker issue.

I think there may be some solutions. I am at the annual allergists' conference in Winnipeg as of tomorrow, covering it for Allergic Living mag.

I'll ask a few of the experts (while I'm asking them many things) and report back.

I am Kelly we travelled the nine hours and went to our sons wedding three years ago.
I did not want to miss it either.Like you we had our food.
I am so sensitive to shellfish, and fish, peanuts. The shellfish has nearly taken my life before really close to death.....
I do not eat it at all!
I was to a store to buy bottle water today and I saw a package of this one kind of soup and I paid for the water and said "You know that stuff as shellfish possibly" Then said I was ana to it and beat it out the door the wrong way so I did not have to be near it.
I have lots of allergies but thought only tought mention them...
I understand your fears very much as I age what other health problems can I encounter also.

I did speak to a couple of allergists about beta blockers vs. epinephrine while at the allergists' conf. in Winnipeg. The one I spoke to at greater length felt it was important that your heart specialist and your allergist confer. He suggested that, as there is no current alternative to epinephrine, perhaps there is another blood pressure drug you could take. But this allergist said it would depend on your medical situation, and that's why it would be important to get the two specialists to speak or e-mail and compare notes on the risks/benefits of your two conditions/medications.

Don't know if that's helpful or whether you've already tried this route, but I asked... Also, came across this somewhat interesting conversation among cardio specalists on the topic of what to do when beta blockers can't be prescribed. It's mostly in the context of asthma and COPD, but the problem is similar.

Is anyone else out there allergic to corn and corn derivatives? I feel like I am the only person on the planet with this allergy... It is becomiing impossible to avoid all of the thousands of things made from corn. My most recent discoveries (major skin reactions) include: corn oil being used as the vitamin carrier in our milk supply and corn derived organic acids being used on fresh meat to keep them fresh looking. I am running out of "safe" food to eat.

Can some one please explain to me what these short forms mean. Ex. ygg.? What it that. I have a clue, but not quite sure. Also, just how do I the 'Quote' thing.? re: when I wish to responde to another person. Any advise would be appreciated, as this is the only chat type site I have ever been on. I
