Talking Allergies

Hi, all:

I am new to this forum and happened upon it while looking for info on my new allergies. All my life, I have been allergic to environmental allergies only. Now at 43 years old, I found that I am ana to peanuts and other tree nuts which started approximately six months ago. Since then I have stayed away from peanuts and had a similar reaction to an unknown. More recently, I have become allergic to even more and recently ate the "salad of death". Looking to get onto a health kick, I made a six bean salad with kale. Now the new allergy is to kale, all of the six beans and something I put into the dressing. (I took all the ingrediants into the allergist and they made paste with the ingredients and did a askin test). New allergies seem to be kicking up in me fast and furious!

Does anyone else have a similar story or explanation?

Several people have adult-onset allergies here. I'm one of them, and your bio sounds a little like my own. e.g. bad pollen allergies as a kid, but no overt food allergies (sick a couple times on pb).

As an adult, developed anaphylaxis to shellfish, then later came ana. allergies to peanut and soy. Frustrating, perplexing, bit scary till figured out.

In addition, I react to spinach - hives. And same to kale, collard greens.

Having beans issues too, is tough. Presume they are legumes? Peanut is a legume and sometimes people with pn allergy will react to other legumes, e.g. beans or chickpeas (or in my case, soybeans).

There is no simple explanation as to "why" these things happen to us as adults.
But since you had enviro allergies, you definitely had the allergic "predisposition". Yet some will never have anything beyond the enviro allergies.

I too developed allergies as an adult but i don't have seasonal allergies,

Mine started about 9 months ago first of all with raisins, then apples and peaches, so i went to the allergy clinic and had skin prick testing and it turns out i'm allergic to apples peaches strawberries peanuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and sunflower seeds! It's quite scary, i also went on a health kick which is when i realised i had allergies.

I have adult-onset allergies. It was quite a shock because nobody in my family ever had allergies. Then my older sister developed a long list of fa's, and my older brother developed pa.

At first, my body seemed to go in to *system overload*. I was reacting to everything -- foods and animals. Once I managed to eliminate my actual allergens, everything else calmed down. I no longer react to animal dander, and as long as I avoid peanuts and sesame seeds, I don't react to food.

Another adult-onset here! I had two miserable years of horrible 'eczema' that turned out to be caused by corn allergies. I kept saying it was not eczema (I have had that and know what it looks like!) and they kept saying it was. Finally, I kept a food journal, tracked my symptoms, figured it out and had it confirmed by testing. More recently, I had a reaction to flax (again, confirmed by testing) and have been having wheat issues, although the test was negative. I also have a diagnosed tree nut allergy. I have never reacted to a nut that I know of, but I had a violent reaction to raw apples that the allergist thinks might be a cross-reaction (oral allergy syndrome). It was quite a shock, after 20-odd years of uneventful apple eating!

I may have to add grapes to my list grrrrr !! i just find the whole thing soo strange?
