to give one personal example----not too long ago, i was reading in a university library, saw someone eating nuts and went up to her to explain the allergy situation and ask her to put them away. (i'm not in the habit of asking complete strangers not to eat nuts. but people aren't supposed to be eating in the library in the first place.) when i got close, i found the smell so nauseating that i seriously felt like gagging. i tried to stay calm....i didn't get sick but if i started panicking i might have. my theory here is that the smell of the nuts triggered a memory of a traumatic reaction which did involve involuntary gagging. but there's always the possibility too that I could actually be having a reaction to airborne peanut protein. regardless, i avoid being around nuts as much as possible. and i expect close family and friends to be understanding and supportive.

I took my son to see the Alouettes play at the McGill Stadium - this complete *rsehole and I can't think of any other description, had a bag of peanuts and was flicking the darn shells everywhere. The tickets, the snacks, the pennants ended up costing me over $200 and we had to leave at the end of the first quarter...I was furious and the reaction from the braindead fan? A shrug of the shoulders and the comment that I should "Keep my kid home." I could have smashed him in the face - instead - I reported him and his behaviour to security. 2 of the guards went up to chat with him; I don't know the end result because I had to take my son home.

that's horrible. that would be rude behaviour from the point of view of a non-allergic person (who wants food flicked all over) so i guess his response was consistent with his boorish behaviour. really, though, people like that should be escorted out of the stadium.

Hello, Im new here, but, have been allergic to apples my entire life, from birth, I have some weird scientific name where Im allergic to birch trees as well. My question regarding allergins, is, Ive never really had a problem kissing guys whom had apples, but over the last 5 years my allergy seems to be getting stronger to the point just smelling apples in the grocery shop makes my chest tight. Recently, my husband (of 2 months :D ) has bought fruit bars to eat at work, I did not see the problem in this as he brushes his teeth, but, my allergy has been getting alot stronger, and Ive become ALOT more paranoid, and after reading the post ive seen something about allergens in sweat as well as semen, we are not trying for kids right now, so we take precautions, and are ALWAYS protected, but, now im thinking that if something happens could this cause a reaction as well, should I be concerned about this or am I just being crazy? sometimes I feel like Im loosing my mind as I am so paranoid Ive had 7 reactions the last 3 months. I normally only have 1 or 2 a year. Is it possible the constant contact to allegens from kissing him, is making my allergies stronger?

tashaussie, it sounds like your talking about oral allergy syndrome-is that it? I understood that suffers of oral allergy syndrome could sometimes eat the fruit if it was cooked. If that was so, I wouldn't think apple juice in a fruit bar would cause a reaction. I can't say for sure if this is what you have or how severe your allergies are.

I don't think your losing your mind but I do know that anxiety and stress can get the body "worked up" so that it seems to react to more allergens. Getting married is a huge stress.

Can you talk to your husband about possible not eating any apples for a period of time so that you can get the reactions under control?

Do you have an allergist whom you can discuss these reactions with?

Thanks for your reply, I think Im a bit more sever then OAS, as I cannot eat apples or pears cant have them, in any for, cooked, or in a vinegar, or raw, if I touch them I get hives, and carry and epi pen. My last reaction was when we were eating out, and I ordered chiken breast and macaroni and cheese, and ate it I had told the waiter to make sure there was no cross contamination. So I was pretty at ease, this was after the wedding, and I really started to feel bad, and couldnt breathe thought it was all in my head so didnt say anything until I started to bite my tongue when I talked as my tongue was swollen. The only thing we could think of the chicken was done on the grill and they had bbq steaks there, so it much have been the cross contamination from that.

I have talked to my husband about not eating apples, he was cool with it, we had a good descussion, he was unaware that his kisses have started to make my lips or face tingle, and I was scared to tell him , cuz he always tells me im being paranoid, but I guess, after the last reaction hes as well scared, that my allergies are getting so bad, and that Ive had so many reactions.

I dont have a good allergist here, I went to one here, and he wasnt very helpful, just told me what I already know, Ive been severly allergic to apples since before I was born, as my mom was unable to eat apples when pregnant with me, shed have my reaction. So most of my tests were done on me as a child, Basically, I just have to avoid everything and anything that have apples or pears in it.
