Vacationing in Brussels with a DS allergic to peanuts, nuts and sesame.

Told Air Transit when we booked - bring own food, inform flight staff.

Called to confirm, was given same info.

Boarded plane - attendant told me she would inform flight captain.

First attendant who fed us, told me she would make an announcement. (never happened)

Standing in line to use wc, watched attendant dipping fingers into large ziploc bag of mixed nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Asked her if she was indeed eating nuts.
Replied yes.
Asked her to be careful as my son (pointed to him) was severly allergic to nuts and peanuts.
Her reply

wait for it

I need to eat.
(ok in French If faut que je me nourisse.)

I was appalled. I once again reiterated his allergies and asked her to stay away from us.
She said she never ate them that she did not wash her hands. I watched her unload garbage with another attendant between bites and help with other tasks and then GO INTO THE BATHROOM TO WASH HER HANDS.

She then proceeded to serve us for the rest of the flight.

Needless to say, we did not go into the bathroom again and when we leave to go home in two weeks time I will bring WAY more food for him.

I will be more forceful in the return flight and I will be mailing a letter to Air Transat.

So far, otherwise, so good.

Stefanie

Wow, some people just don't get it, others refuse to.

How scary for your family.

After my scare on the way over I packed lots more food, anti bacterial wipes and prepared my "I don't care what you think of me but I do not want to use the epipen" voice.

Everything went well - tried to serve him lunch and I said no he has allergies - they said can he not eat anything on the tray? I replied he was allergic to at least two things on the tray (three bean salad had chick peas and roll was full of seeds) and please remove it.

I had to travel the next 6 hours with a plane load of people who had eaten two of his allergens! I wiped EVERYTHING in the bathroom before he went in.

One flight attendant said she wanted to have peanut butter for her lunch - was that ok? I asked her to please wash carefully and not lick my son afterwards. She came back later and told me she was done eating and had wiped up.

All in all, glad we survived and wonderful experience in Europe but real eye opener about the understanding and care about allergies in the air!

Stefanie
