I have contacted Crayola, and it seems that my little guy will have some difficulty developing his pincer grip (yes, I am a teacher:) as he shouldn't use washable markers, pencil crayons, paint, clay, playdough etc. from Crayola. My son is allergic to milk, soy, wheat, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts...he only has to touch something to have a reation. I am told that I can use their crayons if I emove the paper around them. Even this makes me nervous. I've had a package of tadoodle tub crayons sitting here for months. Haven't had a brave day in awhile (and when I do and he has a reaction, I always go itno a tailspin of confidence)...My son loves the alphabet and books and counting. I'd really like for him to try drawing/exploring with some mixed media...but what to use?

Which of his allergens are in the crayola products? Is there and allergen in every product you mentioned?
What about a regular pencil just broken in 1/2 and sharpened so it isn't too long?

Why don't you call ALEX toys? Maybe they have some products you can use.
Can he use a glue stick? Maybe have him glue shapes, that you've cut out, onto a paper.

My daughter used to glue pictures cut from Avon catalogues into seasonal art. One of my favourite works of art was several colourful circles glued slightly over lapping and the daycare provider drew on antennae and a face...voila, a caterpillar!

If he's old enough, stringing beads onto pipe cleaners is a fun activity. Even just sorting buttons into muffin tins by colour or size...

What terrific suggestions. I love the cut and paste, stringing and sorting ideas. C is 19months old. Maybe I will call another company. Soy is in everything washable.

Sorting and stacking toys or even Duplo building blocks might be good...
