Monty - are you talking about the Anakit? (Also called a Bee-sting kit.)

It came in a little plastic case with a filled needle (two adult doses of epinephrine), a string, and two chewable antihistamines?

Thank the good lord you never had to use it on yourself. It was NOT to be injected in the vein. The reason the string was in the kit was if you got stung by an insect that you are allergic to on an extremity (arm, leg) you were to tie above the sting to prevent the poison from getting through your body. The actual epinephrine was to be injected into muscle - just like the epi-pen is.

I carried around one of those kits for years. Stupid things. Imagine doing this while in the throws of anaphylaxis-----take the plastic cover off of needle, hold needle upright and flick with finger to get air bubble to the top, squeeze needle to get air out of needle, inject into leg and push plunger HALF WAY. Repeat with second half if necessary.

Stupid things were leaking in my purse, so I stopped carrying them around. Then, of course, I went in to anaphylactic shock - so now I always have my epi-pen with me.

My daughter has broken out in hives from the smelll of peanut butter on a couple of occassions.

Also if we're grocery shopping she can tell you when she is in proximity of nuts, even those sealed in plastic packaging.

Monty...

yes she was tested at 22 mos and is confirmed allergic to peanuts. We also consider her allergic to tree nuts but this is unconfirmed however given the risk of cross contamination it is a good assumption.
