Talking Allergies

Ugh! This is the worst news ever. Pizza Pizza now carries breaded, deep-fried shrimp. Gone are the days of pizza and french fries. Maybe for the better!

Just wanted to give the heads up - before, the only fish products were in anchovies and a couple sealed dressings. I think there is also soy in the shrimp batter - but check on the website, they have updated their information.

Update: just got off the phone with customer service. All restaurants have been advised by head office (apparently) to only deep-fry the shrimp in the same oil as the chicken wings. The fries are done totally separately in a different fryer. So, no wings, yes fries, it seems.

Today we have just purchased pizza at Pizza Pizza and we were going to buy chicken wings (we ordered online and picked up our order). When we entered, we saw a sign showing how they are offering shrimp. We were told that the chicken AND potentially the fries are done in the same oil so no more of those for us. Usually, the shrimp and wings are done in the same oil and the fries and onion rings in another vat but the supervisor says the shrimp could also be done in the one for the fries and onion rings (just not the chicken wings) The shrimp used to be baked but are now deep-fried. I was shocked as it seems that this is new but looking at this thread, it seems that it has been going on for a while. (We didn't take the wings of course). Just shows you that we have to ask so many questions.

As a shellfish allergic, I've given up on anything deep-fried at restos.

For a while, there was a local fish and chips place I could go to - had great fish. Wonderful fries. Very Brit. But alas, a year ago, they introduced the dread deep-fried shrimp. And that was that.

Is it weird that even though I'm ana to shellfish, eating something fried in the same oil as shrimp has never bothered me? I didn't start taking chances, I just realized along the way that I've been doing this all my life! I've heard that the oil gets so hot it burns off the protein... but maybe this is just a myth?

I didn't think that cooking can "kill" the protein. I suspect you have been very lucky.
