We are biting the bullet and taking the kids to a restaurant this evening to celebrate the start of a week's vacation and my brother's b-day. We've been in touch with the restaurant (a really nice one that we love in Chelsea, QC) by email for a few weeks, and are hopeful that things will go smoothly.

We are going earlyish (5 pm) to make sure that the kitchen is relatively calm and that they are able to use sterilized kitchenware (their suggestion), and have pre-selected dishes for the kids. It seemed the best way to do things, and the chefs agreed.

So... wish us luck! It's not your typical dining experience (how many people converse by email for weeks in advance, and preselect the food??), but the kids are excited and -- even better -- my DH and/or I don't have to do the dishes!!

Well, it cost us a small fortune (it's a NICE restaurant), but we had a great dinner with no problems. When we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see the table all laid out with my kids' cutlery in separate plastic bags with their names on them -- I never would have thought of that. The food was amazing and the kids were great... I'd been kind of worried that they would act a bit unsophisticated because they haven't been to a restaurant in 2 years, but they were awesome.

And no kitchen to clean up!! Yay!!

My youngest declared that he wanted to go again tomorrow!! If only we could afford it. ;)

That's awesome Karen! It's nice to get a break from cooking once in a while! :D
I'm glad it went well for you.

You *know* they get it when they put the cutlery in plastic bags! That's great, Karen.

I know - that was an amazing touch. I just sent them a very effusive thank you email, promising that while we won't be there every month (that would be cruel ;) ), we would return for special occasions.

Thanks for all the congrats, you guys. It was actually a pretty big step for us to go to a restaurant... (which I'm sure you all guessed). :)

Karen, what is the name of the restaurant?

We live too far, so it's not for us, but I just thought that they deserved a bit of free advertising!

I've modified this post to remove the name of the restaurant.

They have just emailed us (in response to my thank-you) to say that they don't feel they can accomodate us in the future. They were very nice about it, but I'm kind of heartbroken.

Sigh....
