I just learned that the Famous Players/CinePlex no longer use dairy free popcorn. Going to the movies was one of our greatest joys where my daughter could have what everone else was having POPCORN AND POP.

The ingredients in the popcorn/popcorn oil contains 'butter flavouring'.

Wish parents could lobby the movie industry to return to the former popcorn oil that the Famous Players used. It was dairy free and tasted way better. Even I don't like the current flavour.

Have you checked with the supplier to ensure that the "Butter Flavouring" actually has any dairy ingredients in it? It could just be chemically flavoured. I'd check it out before giving up!

I have food allergies but also have severe asthma. The last time I went to the movies I had to change seats to the other side of the theatre because the people who came in late and sat in front of me must have bathed in their perfume. For the entire movie I had difficulty breathing after the exposure and did not have an enjoyable time at all. I put an editorial in the local newspaper after that but people still just don't get it that perfume is not necessary in public places.

I took the liberty of Emailing Cineplex Odeon.
Here is their response.

"Thank you for contacting Cineplex Entertainment Guest Services. Please note that our popcorn does not contain any milk products. Please find below the ingredients.

Popcorn popping salt

Ingredient : Salt flour, Natural spice extracts, natural flavor, FD&C colours, calcium silicate.

Popping Oil

Ingredients : Canola oil, artificial butter flavor, Beta carotene, TBHQ


Please let us know if you need more information."

Rhonda, where did you hear about the milk allergens? Are you sure it was Cineplex?

Does "calcium silicate" contain dairy? It's not listed on the Government Canada Food Labelling website, but maybe that's what's triggering the concern . . .

Thank you for contacting them to obtain the information. I had checked their website for food allergy info and couldn't find anything regarding any allergens. :)

Just got this e-mail today, looks like it's true about potential dairy contamination.

I haven't taken any popcorn in theatre since my milk allergy was diagnosed... The fact that there is "butter" (i.e. Becel margarine or else) that can be added to the popcorn (after popping) is too risky for me. There is major cross-contamination when it comes to popcorn area (at least from the few times I stood there and watched them work).

I bring wipes to wash my hands and eat my own popcorn. I've seen in the dollar store (if my memory is right) that you can buy popcorn paper bag that you can fill with your own popcorn... feels more like movie-popcorn :P

Here's a template for making your own paper popcorn bags - it's a little small but cute!
(it's also good for sleep overs and movie nights instread of all hands in the communal bowl)
