Every time a new issue of your magazine comes out I search for some mention of Corn Allergy. My heart totally sinks when I see that there is none yet again.

Or...have I missed something?

Eldi, I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed.

Allergic Living doesn’t try to approach all individual food allergens in every magazine. Rather, to include more of our readers, we look for topics that affect many readers, regardless of their specific food allergies.

That’s the case with this issue’s cover article on dating, socializing, kissing with allergies or the travel article, or the issues we cover for the many readers dealing with schools and parenting. Our recipes aren’t always corn-free (we concentrate on the top 11 allergens), but they often are – since our Food Editor uses few packaged goods.

That said, I know we’ve had a question or two re corn to the Drs. in Ask the Allergists. And our senior editor is talking about an upcoming article that will include corn issues (we do realize it is one of the harder allergens to avoid, and I can relate as someone allergic to soy). Also, Alisa Bar-Dayan, our dietitian columnist always welcomes specific allergen questions. If you have one, by all means send it to: editor@allergicliving.com.

Reminder to everyone in fact … Ask the Allergists, Ask the Dietitian, Ask the Celiac Expert are all in response to reader questions. If you’ve got a good question, do pass it along.

Eldi, one last thing I’d ask you to consider: there are 11 top allergens in Canada now and the “other” food allergens growing in prevalence (corn, chicken, garlic etc.) Then all the environmental triggers for those with allergic asthma, the dermatitis allergies. It’s a lot of ground to cover – and we find the “topic” approach generally more effective and inclusive.

When it comes to specific allergies, our website is about to get more interesting. We’re working on a wholesale revise that will include individual allergies and their specific issues. We’re aiming to get that up in March.

So please don’t think the editors here frivolously avoid any allergy issues. We really are very dedicated to making life with allergies more manageable.
