We had a dog before our daughter was born, she had eczema, asthma and hives. The cause the dog. We had to give our family pet away due to her allergies. So having a dog early on does not prevent allergies, and causes families to have to give away their family pet.

It might be because allergies are in the family, neither parent has allergies but close family members do. She is also allergic to milk, peanuts and tree nuts. Maybe there is a connection, but for sure, having a dog early or prior to birth does not prevent allergies.

Pinkster, nobody's saying it's 100% or that genetics don't also play a role. We thought it was quite an intriguing trend to report on, given that our society knows so little about "why" allergies emerge.

And the scientists are definitely seeing a trend - in study after study now those infants who had a dog have less inclination to develop allergies. The numbers on this are big, as we reported.

So it's unfortunate this didn't hold true for your family, and as you say genetics could be a bigger factor in your case. But the dog certainly has had a protective effect for other children.

Allergic to soy, peanut, shellfish, penicillin
