Talking Allergies

Hi everyone,

I'm committed this summer to trying out Asian cooking. As we all know, for people with a nut allergy, going out for Thai is insane, and with an egg/shellfish allergy I've never gone out for Chinese, either.

I want to try Indian first, as I've found some naan bread that is safe (by Kontos - in Ottawa available at Hartman's on Bank). I don't think I've ever tried curry spice, though, or garam masala.

Just from word of mouth/personal experience, do people with nut allergies have problems with any Asian spices?

We're dealing with peanut and tree nut allergies, my son hasn't had any reaction to any asian spices thus far -- I've used curry powder, cardamom, cumin, coriander, and turmeric.
Here's a Butter Chicken recipe that I posted a while ago -- it's very simple and tasty! (Assuming the ingredients are safe for you...)

We've never had any issues with Indian spices, but I vaguely remember someone (peanut allergic) talking about avoiding fenugreek. I googled it and found the following reference:


Should I avoid other legumes, e.g., peas, beans or soya?
No, not unless you are actually allergic to them as well. Even though the skin test is positive, if you have been able to tolerate peas, beans and other legumes before, they may be continued, unless you begin to react when you eat them. In addition to peanut, legumes include peas, beans, Soya, chick peas (garbanzo beans), lentils, split peas, lupin seeds, dahl, tamarind, licorice, carob, soy sprouts, bean sprouts, cassia, alfalfa, fenugreek, tragacanth, acacia and senna.

By the way, fenugreek is also known as methi, and again, we've never had any problems with Indian spices, though we tend to use home-ground garam masalas etc. (we have a lot of ana. allergies).

That's interesting, panacea. Thanks for the research! I think if I'm unsure of something new, googling it as you did would be helpful.
