When I was young I used to love my Dad's nuts & bolts--the cheerio/chex/penuts/pretzels mix. I try to make them now, replacing the peanuts with fish crackers, but they're just not the same. I thought maybe it was because you lose the oils from the peanuts, so I added extra margarine, but still kind of bland. Does anyone have a good recipe for peanut and treenut free nuts and bolts, one with good flavour, a little spicy?

I don't have a recipe but wanted to bump this thread because I would be interested too.

I think what it's missing isn't oil....it's nuts.

Do you have a safe nut substitute?

sunflower seeds or soy nuts are my substitutes, but hard to find lately.

would sesame seeds work? not for me, obviously :rofl but I'm not sure if they'd give the right texture. and I don't know your allergies.
