I have a longstanding interest in what causes some kids to bully.
Have written some on the topic.

This new study shows a biological connection - in the brain's pre-frontal cortex. This is worrisome but illuminating research.

Bullying tendency wired in brain
Bullies' brains may be wired differently, research suggests

An area of the brain associated with reward lit up in scans when aggressive boys watched a video of someone inflicting pain.

Boys without a history of unusual aggression had no such response, the study in Biological Psychology found.

The aggressive teenagers also reacted more strongly to pain that was accidentally caused.

The small study of 16-18 year olds - eight with a "conduct disorder" and eight with no aggressive tendency - suggests in some boys, natural empathetic impulses may be disrupted in ways that increase aggression, the researchers said.

..... Using the same type of research, study leader Jean Decety, professor in psychology and psychiatry at the University of Chicago, has previously shown that seven to 12 year olds have naturally empathy for people in pain.

16 kids isn't much of a study group -- but it's interesting and will probably lead to a larger study group.

I am curious though -- about the difference between physical bullying and psychological bullying, and whether each of these groups would respond the same on the MRI. Actually, it makes me curious about a lot of things.....is this difference just something some kids are born with or a physical injury caused it or abuse as a child caused it (i.e. bullying parent). Honestly, I don't think the last would be accurate. Some kids seem to be bullys from the time they can crawl.

Wonder if we can develop an area in the brain and thereby raise nicer people?
Or...more docile citizens.
Or...more a dangerous military
Brave New World!
