I keep running into (don't worry, not literally) more and more women expecting twins.

Anybody know, are there more twins today than in past?
Just curious.

Are youu sure they're really pregnant with twins? Maybe they are just imagining it. Maybe they just want the attention. Maybe their houses are too clean. Perhaps they've had too much/too little **. I think we should ask Nicholas Christakis what his take on the situation is...

Sorry-I couldn't resist! Actually, I read many years agothat the older you are the higher the percentage that you will concieve twins. Many women are waitng until later to start their families. Could this have something to do with it?

Here is a website that gives similar statistics but I didn't see a reference:

Let's ask Prof. Nikolas - lol.

I'd heard there were more due to fertility treatments - but that's not the issue in the women I'm mentioning.

This, however, probably does explain:

The twinning rate is doubled for ages 35 to 40..

Thanks for the link - I've sent it to my one friend in the age range, who's awaiting her pair of kids.

I also think that with the improvement in prenatal care, more twins survive then in the past. Just my own assumption.
