Cell phone use while driving :frightened

Laws :thumbsup

Thumbs rings!!!!

We just passed a law here in Alberta It's been hard for some I guess...soooooo what a great idea I just heard about on CBC radio. http://victimservicesalberta.com/

Quote:
Bill 16 – the Distracted Driving Legislation – comes into effect September 1, 2011.
Drivers will be restricted from:
using hand-held cell phones
texting or emailing
using electronic devices such as laptops, cameras, mp3 players
entering information on GPS units
reading printed material
writing, printing or sketching and
personal grooming.
The fine for this new offence is $172.
More importantly, it will save lives.
Working with the AMA and the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police, Victim Services will be distributing thumb rings as part of the awareness campaign, reminding drivers of this new law.

8) What's the law in other provinces?

Ontario is similar but I believe the fine is $150. We have had it in place for 2 yrs :)

Edit to add: The fine doesn't seem to deter people. I see numerous people everyday on the major highways using cell phones. I actually had a lady cut me off the other day while she was talking on the phone. She didn't get it! :verymad

If I could take pictures while driving I could photograph many offenders. I find the worst are within our subdivision - way too many are on their phones.

Manitoba has a law against handheld phone for talking or texting. Yet, sadly, a man was killed last week and suspected the other driver was texting.

When it is a company vehicle that is using their phone I get the kids to record the plate, company and location and time and then I call the company to complain...

This law is reminiscent of the seatbelt law. Most of you may be too young to remember but when I was growing up, seatbelts were not standard on cars.

Many years of road stops for seat belt checks has led to people wearing them most of the time, we still get a few who won't. It will take many years people to comply with the distracted driver laws. Wasn't the Mayor of Toronto in the news not so long ago for talking on his cell phone while driving? :freak

The scary part is that typically an offender not wearing a seatbelt only affects themselves. The driver who is texting is a risk to everyone else on the road!

There are still too many people I know who drink and drive :banghead
