The lawyer for a mother whose child died in foster care says not only is the province refusing to tell her what happened, it won't even have autopsy results until next winter.

"I still can't believe it's going to take another five and half months to find out why this baby died," lawyer Larry McConnell said Wednesday.

"The government does not want this story out. The only way I'm going to find out is if I sue them."

Harry Chase of the Alberta Liberals said the provincial auditor general recommended four years ago the province improve its intervention services.

He said 51 children have died in care in Alberta in the last decade.

This story really disturbs me. I am putting it here so I don't forget to follow up.

Sullivan said she wants to know what happened to her baby.

"Still nobody has told me anything about what happened to her, why she wasn't taken to a doctor when we demanded her to be."

On a supervised visit, Sullivan noted her baby had diarrhea and red marks on her face and was likely dehydrated. She asked the child be taken to hospital, but the foster caregiver decided to wait a few days to assess the symptoms.

Sullivan said she was not informed her baby was in hospital. She said she got a call about six hours after Delonna died.

Still disturbs me and I definitely want to know more. Btw, here is some background on the Alberta gov. that is interesting too.

Mrs. Fritz previously served as Minister of Children and Youth Services. In her capacity as Minister of Children and Youth Services, she worked with families and communities to provide nurturing, safe environments for children and youth.

The above position is no longer and now revamped, I guess to this. Minister of Human Services which includes many things.

Dave Hancock is in his fourth term as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Whitemud. On March 12, 2008, he was appointed Minister of Education and Government House Leader.

In his third term, Dave served as Minister of Health and Wellness and as Government House Leader. He was also appointed as a member of the Agenda and Priorities Committee, Treasury Board, the Legislative Review Committee, the Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing Committee, and the Cabinet Policy Committee on Community Services.

He has previously served as the Minister of Advanced Education, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Minister of Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs, and vice–chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Education and Employment. During each of his terms in office, Dave has served as a member of Treasury Board and the Agenda and Priorities Committee.

Just like kids - when you think you might have things figured out- they go and change.

In the same interview, Hancock also said he's committed to reviewing a law that prohibits the publication of the names of children in the government's care, even if they die in foster care or while being protected by social services.
Quote:
However, Alberta NDP critic Rachel Notley said she is worried that children's services programs will get buried in the very large ministry, and it will be more difficult to pinpoint if the government hits key programs with funding cuts.
"It will be even more difficult to track and to follow," Notley said, noting the "the richest province in the world" should be able to do better for children suffering abuse and neglect.
