I am looking for peanut and nut free bird seed. Does anyone know of either a commercial brand or a small manufacturer who would be willing to ship to me?

Many thanks,

Karen

(Rachel, 10 years, is allergic to peanuts and nuts)

HI again Karen,

Another option is to phone a vet's office and ask them to recommend ingredients to make your own homemade mix. I know that budgies eat some fruit and vegetables, you would just need other ingredients to balance its diet and perhaps a vitamin. They might also know of a brand of seeds that is safe. I recently had to change my dog to a new food for her bladder and the vet phoned the manufacturer to make sure it was peanut free. (Some dog food brands are not safe.)

Here are a couple of websites you can contact also for more info:

Good luck!

Hi, I did stop into a local vet's office and spoke to the counter staff who looked at me as if I had two heads! I think you're right though - the actual vet would probably be able to help me.

Thanks for the suggestion and websites.

K.

Hi Karen,

I was at a Fortinos supermarket, which is owned by Loblaws here in Burlington and they have a No Name budgie food! It doesn't contain peanuts, doesn't have any warning about peanuts, so it could be safe but you do need to phone SunFresh and find out for sure.

Meanwhile, here is an email I wrote to the Superpet store chain:

Hi,

I was wondering if you sold a line of budgie food and a line of bird seeds that were peanut-free.

There are more and more children with peanut allergies who cannot own pets like budgies or any other animals that eat peanuts. Also, a lot of schools have become peanut free and so can no longer have hamsters and rabbits in their classrooms. Furthermore, I know that a lot of dog and cat foods are produced in plants that handle peanut hulls. Perhaps getting a line of peanut free pet foods would be worth looking into?

And here is their answer.

Good afternoon Nicole,

We do not currently sell such a product, but your points are well taken. I will monitor customer requests and watch for suitable products, although I am not aware of any such product line being currently available in Canada.

Yours truly,

Brad Hamilton
Super Pet

Who knows? Maybe it will get someone thinking!

Thanks for all the input! No luck yet but I haven't given up!
