I found Gingerbread Boy Cookies and Christmas Tree cutout cookies with green sprinkles tonight at No Frills grocery store. The packaging states "Nut Free" (they do contain egg and dairy). I picked up the Gingerbread Boy cookies and because I'm not familiar with them, am going to give them a call tomorrow to confirm their "nut free" claim. I think this is the first time I've found Christmas cookies that were plainly labelled nut free. If you check out the link below, you'll see that they also make gingerbread houses, etc.

Ethansmom, I have also bought the nut free cookies. They also had pumpkin cookies at Halloween.

I wrote to the company a while back to ask them if peanuts are included in this "nut free", before I post their link. I pointed out that it is important for allergic people to differentiate between peanut and nut free. I never received a reply however. Perhaps you'll be luckier.

I did see their gingerbread houses in the stores but it doesn't say "nut free" on them, so I'm not sure if they're safe. There seems to be some inconsistency with their labelling.

Here is their website:

Thanks Nicole -- just got off the phone with them and they confirmed that no peanut / tree nuts in the plant. I asked a general question about their gingerbread house kits and it seems it's the same issue as others have posted about. They have a "may contain" because of the candies (manufactured at a different plant). I wonder if Dare would be interested in teaming up with one of these companies to produce a "complete" peanut / tree nut free gingerbread house kit?

From a dairy and egg allergy point of view, I personally would rather not see Dare involved. They have very few products that don't contain dairy or egg (or have a may contain warning). And I haven't found ANY Dare candy that doesn't have a dairy warning.

What I would like to see is clearer labelling with regards to the components of these kits. I would like to see them treat each component as a separate product, so that it's clear (for example) that the gingerbread doesn't contain peanuts, nuts, dairy or egg (if this is the case), and that Candy A may contain peanuts/nuts, while Candy B doesn't contain peanuts/nut/dairy/egg, etc.

K.

Yes Karen, that's a much better idea.
