Is there is anyone out there that might know the source of the vegetable oil used in making abura age (deep fried tofu slices).

My husband and I are making "enari sushi" today (my husband is Japanese-Canadian, and New Year's Day is a big celebration for the Japanese-Canadian community). We are making several dishes, one of them being "enari sushi" using abura age (deep fried tofu slices). The ingredient list is as follows: soya beans, water, vegetable oil & calcium sulphate. We've made this years ago, but not ever for our son with multi food allergies. The company that made these particular tofu pockets is "Shinbo Tofu" and is based out of Vancouver.

I realise I may not get an answer for our allergic friends today, but I thought it might be worth a shot! Thanks very much.

Honestly, your best bet is to contact the company directly and inquire as to your specific allergen of concern.
Some companies change their ingredients depending on supply availability and some have deeply guarded recipies. Most will be happy to answer a straight forward question as their motivation is you buying their product.
If they don't use a safe oil, perhaps they would concider it.
Good luck.

Thanks Susan. Yes, I did try calling them this morning, but of course there is no answer. I just wished I'd checked this out when we purchased it. I will call them tomorrow (it will be too late by then, but at least we will know for the future!), but I thought I'd give it a shot on the Allergic Living forum. If we are unable to get an answer today, we won't serve our son the "enari sushi".
