We tried the donuts on the weekend and they were surprisingly very good. It was very exciting because it was my kids' first donuts ever - we took photos of them looking through the holes!

According to the website:

"free from common allergens such as wheat, dairy, soy, gluten, eggs, and refined sugars"

We asked in shop and they said there were no peanuts, tree nuts or sesame on the premises.

(As usual, inquire each time...)

3054 Dundas Street West in the Junction (Just West of High Park Ave on the North side of the street)

That is exciting! My brother lives close by and we visit them regularly. Do they check if their ingredients have traces of nuts?
We will have to check them out.
Thanks for passing this on.
Kate

When I talked to them on the phone, they seemed very on the ball - though the Saturday sales people did not exude confident answers. They did not have ingredient sheets handy to consult which I would say was a downfall of their customer service...that's why I indicated to keep asking questions.

Here is the response that I received from Bunners:

Hi Kate!

Our baked goods are free from milk, eggs and peanuts BUT it is not "free" enough for a life threatening allergy. Some of our ingredients (ie/ chocolate chips) were not processed in nut-free facilities.

Thanks and if you have any more questions, please ask!

Why say they are free of if they aren't???? This is very misleading, similar sales pitch a new bakery here in Ottawa has used . Thimbles had the same disclaimer of 'we offer dairy free etc...' then it turns out only a few are dairy, gluten free (etc.) but how free if they are all made in the same tiny bakery. So it a way they are right, they said they offer not they all are, but playing with words could be prove to be very dangerous.

Not impressed with their reply. You either buy safe chocolate chips or you don't. They should reconsider their advertising. I'll pop in some time over the summer and interrogate them again and query why they are not striving to be the best speciality bake shop they could be.

Another issue of allergy awareness and what these phrases really mean. Once we get the precautionary label laws, we can work on this issue... :banghead
