Does anyone know of a brand of nutritional yeast that would be nut and peanut free, and where to find it? I have only seen the one by Bob's Red Mill and it is "may contain". Or is there something else that can be substituted for it in recipes?

Red Star makes some but I haven't found it in original packaging. It always seems to be bulk packaged in a facility that may contain. I've never called to see if the original is safe, so you may want to do that. They may be able to tell you where to purchase it as well. Some health food stores will order it in by request.

Nutritional yeast has a unique 'strong cheese' taste - I had it once before I was trace reactive. I cannot think of anything that would make an equivalent substitution. (I am one of few people who don't like the taste, but many people love it.)

I don't care for the taste either. I find that I can get enough of a creamy/cheesy taste with nutmeg, oil, salt and mustard. Oh, and use unsweetened milk alternative!

If you are looking to make a cheesy sauce, check out this recipe:

We substitute 100 g tofu for the cashews and adjust a few other seasonings to our taste. It works great as a cheezy veggie dip/sauce too.

Great reminder Susan. Unsweetened milk alternatives are key for savoury sauces.

Oh we struggled for ages on the nutritional yeast one... with brands slowly eliminated with the warnings popping up

At the moment, we have been pleased to find one from BRAGG (it is also kosher for those who care)

We called to make sure it was appropriate for our family and it was (YAY)
The label also specifically says:

"This product contains no salt, sugar, no egg, milk, gluten, wheat, corn, no starch, soy, animal derivatives, no artificial colours & preservatives, no Candida albicans yeast or brewery by-products as in brewer's yeast."

I'd say health food stores for sure and maybe even a Lowbllaw/Canadian SuperStore depending on your areas
