Our son was to have a sunflower seed oral challenge yesterday following a negative skin test in February. Prior to the challenge, he was retested with both the fresh sunflower seeds and the antigen (the stuff in the vial) and he had a huge positive reaction to both the fresh and the antigen so, of course, we did not proceed with the oral challenge. The nurse (who is absolutely wonderful btw) was quite surprised to see his huge reaction when he had had a negative reaction just a few months ago, but she's wondering if it was a problem with the antigen. Anyway, we were prepared that he might not pass the oral challenge, but we did not expect to see a positive skin test. It sure goes to show how important it is to repeat a test and this is not an exact science, but the best we have available.

Sorry to hear that Julie. It would have been nice to drop one off his list.

Sorry to hear he reacted. I'm glad they test again just before the challenge. The situation could have been a much worse.

How is your son taking this?

Thanks AnnaMarie and Susan for your replies. Our son was disappointed, but not terribly so. We were surprised with the positive skin test... thank goodness a retest is done!
