I'm writing a story on SPF allergies and would like to chat with someone who is allergic to sunscreens. I'm interested in when/how you discovered your allergy, how difficult it is to manage and what you do/use to protect yourself from the sun safely. Anyone willing to share their experiences would be hugely appreciated.

I'm allergic to most chemical sunscreens, verified by my allergist and dermatologists.

From PABA: white patchy lesions, much like chemical burns.
The rest (methoxycinnamate, avobenzone, etc) all give me contact dermatitis, which worsens in sunlight (catalyst reaction with UV). Avobenzone will make my eyes swell shut if I sweat and it runs into my eyes.

I use mineral sunblocks: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide. I also wear dark clothing made of tightly woven fabric. When I was allergic to UV-A (yeah, combine a photosensitivity with chemical sunscreen allergies), I wore sunblock, covered head to toe in dark fabrics (and some solarweave fabrics), and carried a parasol. Gloves, hats, scarves--all a must back then.

I'm no longer allergic to UV-A, so I just use physical sunblock. Reapply regularly. It's not a big deal.
