Drum roll ...

http://www.allergicliving.com/poetry

Let the winners know what you think of their work in this thread.

On behalf of the judges, thanks to all who entered. We were really, really pleased with the calibre of the entries. And thanks as well to our sponsors: Sharp Electronics, Roots watches and Blue Bear Aware (t-shirts).

We'll post Runners-up soon. Still trying to reach one person.
And the honorable mentions will be posted next week. Lots of good reading.

Gwen

I love this part of Abigail's poem!

I'm not asking you to change your world,
Because I've had to change mine,
I'm just looking for a little understanding
From other people of humankind

I think it sums up quite nicely what we all feel sometimes.

Congratulations to all the winners!

CONGRATULATIONS

Cayley, I absolutely love your poem.

If you ever find that different world, where allergies don't exist -- I'm there with you. And I'm bring my son too.

******

All the poems are great. But I guess Cayley's really touched my heart. :)

Cayley's mom here. :)

Thanks on Cayley's behalf, AnnaMarie, and thanks to the judges as well. She was so shocked and thrilled that she won, she told me she never expected to, and I wish Gwen could have seen the look on her face when she called her with the news. Our family has had a lot of health challenges and stress this year and this was definitely the bright spot of our last few months. Cayley asked me if I'd read the adult winning entry because "it was really good!", so I thought I'd pass that along. Wonderful poems, from the heart, that make us all feel like someone out there really understands our day-to-day life.

Gwen, will we get to read the second place and honourable mentions as well?

Yes, Carolyn. Just swamped - and still trying to contact one runner-up.

Winners all seemed really pleased. It's been great news to share.

I read a few aloud to my husband, and choked up a few times (Cayley's included).
Hearing straight from the heart, especially from kids, hits a chord.

Keep those tissues handy - No. 2s and honorables coming up.

cheers, Gwen

This contest also provided a great opportunity for more allergy education - Cayley's teacher asked her to read her poem in front of the class today, then she answered the questions they had about it. Cayley attends a new school this fall so we're still not sure if her classmates (or their parents) are as allergy aware as they were in her last school. This was a great chance to break the ice and open up some dialogue - just wanted to pass that along. Thanks! :)
