Ragweed Blues

By Lore Ann Pervin

Every year it visits me
Without an invitation.
Round about the middle of August
Begins the irritation.

I grab the nearest tissue box
My ever loyal friend
'Cause when the sneezing starts up
There seems to be no end.

My efforts, they are futile,
Still, I rub my swollen eyes.
And I wanna scrape and scratch my mouth,
It’s so darn itchy inside.

As I look outside the window
From my air-conditioned room,
After weeks of all this madness,
I’ve got the Ragweed Blues.

Held prisoner by a visitor
I don’t want to be around.
So I watch the Weather Channel
And crank up the sound.

Now, there’s only one contender,
Who can truly make me better
And I’m hoping that he stops by
Real soon.

He’ll show that Ragweed
Who’s the boss,
I’m countin’ on ya,
Mr. Frost.

To leave that nasty plant in ruins
Helpless and doomed
Till next year’s bloomings
Then we’ll do it all again,
ACHOO!
[/i]

The Nut Free Life

By Alena Terlecki

I shrink back sadly in dismay,
As I watch everyone eating ice cream and cookies all day.
Chocolate bars, cupcakes, and fudge brownies too,
Gulp, gulp – smack, smack – chew, chew, chew.

Reading the ingredients can be such a bore,
I want to throw my allergy straight to the floor.
When I look at my EpiPen, I feel a pang of fear,
Will I have to use it today or sometime this year?

I ask people if there’s peanuts,
But they don’t seem to understand,
They say, “There’s no nuts,”
But there were traces at hand.

I have a reaction, I feel very sad,
Upset, very confused, and totally mad!
But I read the ingredients, every time,
If there’s no nuts, Score! I should be fine.

But if there’s nuts,
Well, that’s not great,
But it’s better to be safe,
Than to let it determine your fate.

A Story

By Laura Stubbs

This is a story of a cat and a dog, a real big cow and a forest hog.

There’s a big problem in this story today, the cat and the dog are allergic to hay.

The cow has to make a sacrifice, instead of eating hay, maybe some rice.

The cat and the dog said nicely to the cow, “you may eat your hay, just not right now.”

This story is about good friends, who always remember their EpiPens.

The judges must have had a difficult time. These poems are great too.
