I'm not certain whether this furniture would be treated with chemicals or not . . . but I'm betting that if we want formaldehyde and chemical free furniture we'd be better off buying things at Ten Thousand Villages.

http://www.tenthousandvillages.com/

All of their merchandise is handcrafted, and they don't tend to use synthetic materials.

Ten Thousand Villages is run by the Mennonite Central Committee and was one of the founding members of the International Fair Trade Association.

All of their products are high quality and are sold at very reasonable prices----the people who run the stores are volunteers by and large so most of the money you spend in the store goes directly to the artisans.

There are a lot of these stores in the States---the largest I think is in Akron, Pennsylvania. The stores in Canada I've been to are on a much smaller scale.

IKEA is staring to have furniture that has less chemicals in it. They have stricter regulations due to European Union which doesn't allow insane amounts of chemicals that the U.S. does.
