Chemical in air fresheners may be harmful to lungs

A chemical commonly found in air fresheners, toilet cleaners, mothballs and other household products may be harmful to the lungs, US researchers warn.

Dr Stephanie London and her team from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina found that exposure to a volatile organic compound (VOC) called 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB) may cause modest reductions in lung function.

Dr London added: "Even a small reduction in lung function may indicate some harm to the lungs."

"The best way to protect yourself, especially children who may have asthma or other respiratory illnesses, is to reduce the use of products and materials that contain these compounds."

Thanks, Karen. Ironically, the toilet bowl cleaner is the only conventional cleaner that I use . . . I switched to natural products for everything else. That's changing, though after reading this!
