There's a new drug out in Canada (or coming soon) called Alvesco.

According to http://www.medicalpost.com/medicine/cli ... 71230_5080 :

"Alvesco (ciclesonide), a corticosteroid for oral inhalation, is indicated for the prophylactic management of steroid-responsive bronchial asthma in patients 18 years old and older.

According to the supplier of Alvesco, Altana Pharma Inc., the new orally inhaled steroid enables patients to achieve good asthma control with a side-effect profile resembling that of placebo. Steroid-related side-effects are greatly reduced because ciclesonide, uniquely, is activated in the lungs and not in the mouth and throat. The rate of candidiasis in clinical trials with Alvesco was low (0.7%).

A recent Canadian survey of 1,003 patients with asthma found that 58% had uncontrolled asthma and that patient non-compliance is often associated with the occurrence of uncomfortable oral side-effects, such as fungal mouth infections and hoarseness of voice.

According to a spokesperson of the Asthma Society of Canada, ciclesonide is a welcome new therapy option that could result in overall improved disease control.

Supplied here by Altana Pharma Inc., Alvesco is already approved in 39 countries in addition to Canada."

A brief article in Chatelaine (Nov. 2006) stated that with Alvesco going directly to your lungs, one of the things you don't have to worry about is bone density loss. But I'm not entirely sure that's true, given all that I'm reading about it. I would like to find a definitive statement about that aspect.
