Anna McCartney of the support group FEAST wrote a wonderful column published in the Seattle Post Intelligencer on Tuesday.

It begins:

Food allergies a disease with no cure

By ANNA MCCARTNEY
GUEST COLUMNIST

Every day more than 11 million Americans watch what they eat, not because they are trying to lose weight but because their lives may depend on it because of life-threatening food allergies.

When my son Ewan was 10 months old, we fed him eggs for the first time. Within minutes of eating the scrambled egg, one of Ewan's eyes swelled shut. The other eye soon followed. Then he developed hives over his torso. His face swelled. He vomited, started wheezing and lost consciousness. By the time the firefighters arrived, his throat had swelled shut and he was no longer breathing. He was lifeless and blue. I held him in my arms, certain he had died.

Ewan survived and is fine. However, it was a very close call and every day I have to worry that it will happen again. Food allergies are a disease for which there is no cure.

Wow, powerful article! Thanks for posting it.
I can't believe the caustic comments after it...well, yeah, I guess I can.

Please forward this article on to every politician, American and Canadian, you know or can think of.
