Wirral man collapses and dies after allergic reaction to toothache antibiotics

Quote:
A post mortem found some signs of heart disease, but the main cause of his death was anaphylaxis, a type of allergic reaction, caused by an allergy to penicillin.

He had been prescibed the the same medication in the past with no issues. Reaction was swift and seemed to be more cardiac system than respiratory.

It's so sad.

Poor guy.

Adult onset is scary - you're just not expecting. I developed an allergy to pencillin as a young adult. I'd had it before, too, without issue.

But that time: hives from all over, trouble breathing, nausea.
Went to the university clinic thinking I'd developed "measles". One look and they gave me adrenaline.

That is very sad. :(
I developed an allergy to penicillin as a teenager. My reaction was only hives... I have never had penicillin since.

He already had pain in his jaw...would he have associated any discomfort in his mouth/tongue neck to the jaw issue? He is described as having a learning disability, was he used to soldiering on in spite of any difficulty? Did he not have the phrases to describe how he felt?

My penicillin reaction was rapid also. I went in for day surgery and prior to it I needed to go on penicillin. I was 47 at the time and had taken penicillin/amoxicillin my entire life. That day is one I won't forget. Shortly after IV was started things went very fast. I was just several rooms down the hall from emergency and by the time they got me there I had an opening of no more than a straw left in my throat. Much to close!!! :( The doctors who kept me alive later told me that had I been further into the hospital or on the next floor I would not have made it. My seafood allergy 3 yrs later came on just as fast. One never knows from day to day how life will change.
