This is so not ok. I have written CBC as have others who have heard it. I usually look forward to this show as it can be really funny but this crosses the line.

I guess they thought that was a real thigh-slapper.

Once again it makes a person ask: Would anyone do this about another health condition? Once again the answer is: of course not, since that would be tasteless.

Susan, can you find the CBC Ombudsman's address? That's where we should send complaints - they have to follow up on those.

My husband beat me to it and send in his comments

Quote:
Greetings. I am a big fan of your program, having followed you right from season one.

I am, however, disappointed with this week's parody on visual allergies. For those of us who live with, or know someone who is affected by life threatening allergies, attitudes such as those promoted in your program are all too familiar. You have basically managed to further marginalize a group of people who have to deal daily not only with a life-threatening disability, but also with intolerance.

Owing to my familiarity with your work, I am certain that your aim was not to cast any doubts about the existence of life-threatening allergies, but simply to entertain. You have, however, missed the mark on this one. A simple apology would be appropriate.

Mary, very good letter.

FYI, I tweeted about yesterday - and got a response today from the producer.

First my tweets:

1. @CBCThisIsThat So making fun of students with life-threatening #foodallergy #asthma is what passes now for satire?

2. @CBCThisIsThat What legit. medical condition are you planning to mock next?

Reply sent to me from Chris Kelly, the show's producer:

Quote:
I am the producer for This Is That and I saw your tweet this morning and wanted to explain our intentions behind this weekend's episode in more that 140 characters.

First, I want to apologize for the confusion this may have caused and for the perception that we were mocking people who suffer from real allergies. The point of that sketch was that this person was a rude and judgmental student and wasn't suffering from any affliction at all but was using the term allergy as an avenue to get her way. Hopefully this clears things up.

Sigh, as if the literal interpretation would be the takeaway for most listeners. I will reply a little later today to clarify the damage done.

How awful! There is an ombudsman at CBC.

Quote:
The Ombudsman acts as an appeal authority for complainants who are dissatisfied with responses from CBC information or program management.

The Ombudsman generally intervenes only when a correspondent deems a response from a representative of the Corporation unsatisfactory and so informs the Office of the Ombudsman. However, the Ombudsman may also intervene when the Corporation fails to respond to a complaint within a reasonable time.

Specifically, ombudsman@cbc.ca

Interesting - tweets get a much quicker response rate - no reply yet for comments submitted through online response

...keep that in mind for future initiatives

Yes, but remember that the bosses aren't looking at the tweets - just the show's own producers.
