Fyi, Bush's '07 budget killed the funds for the ambitious National Children's Study, which was to track the health of 100,000 U.S. children to examine the development of asthma, diabetes and autism. The news of this came out in late February, so I'm having trouble locating a free media link. (Feel free to post a reliable link if you find one.)

Here's an editorial from the Boston Globe that will give you the gist of the story: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editor ... _for_kids/

That's bad news indeed. And over 50 million was already spent!?

Gwen, I'm asking my U.S. counterpart on Kids With Food Allergies if she has heard anything. It may have kind of slipped under everyone's radar.

Here's a link from the Autism Society's website http://www.autism-society.org/site/News ... iv_ctrl=-1 to a letter asking for funding to be reinstated asap. I'll post more relevant information as I find it. It is a major blow to a program that has the potential for reams of medical advances (not to mention money saved in future health care costs), but the US feds are pretty panicky about money at the moment. The treasury is nearing the 8-something trillion dollar ceiling for debt, after which they have to ask Congress to extend the ceiling - yet again - so they can continue to pay debts and avoid defaulting. This is another story that seems to be slipping under the radar - the dire financial straits of the Bush administration: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060316/pl ... 0316195420

This has indeed slipped under the radar. No one on Kids Wth Food Allergies mentioned it.
