hey all. I just wanted to share my experience going through sports as a kid, since I did pretty much everything (hockey, soccer, karate, gymnastics, horseback riding, and swimming to name a few).

Basically my parents were usually sure to talk to the coach and let them know the situation. Eventually I took over this responsibility, and generally coaches are very accepting and willing to make sure that no one brought in bad food. In the odd case that someone did bring food in it was the same as any situation for me as a kid; I just said no and it got passed along. Be sure though that your kids have thier own waterbottles, as with hockey and soccer and other team sports sometimes the coaches will bring in a few for the team.

And specifically to swimming, I know that at many novice meets and definetly at lessons food is not allowed on deck to begin with. And even if it is, to be perfectly honest no allergen protien would survive the levels of chemicals that are put into most pools (I have had, on more the one occasion, my swimsuits dissolve from one entry in to the water to give you an idea of how strong they make it). Lastly it's common for guards at municipal pools to have allergy training and be allowed to administer epi pens (at least in the city of toronto). I have competitvely swam and lifeguarded for almost 8 years now and have never had a problem.

AnneMarie, i think your case is highly unusual and you should take it up with the school board. I have never guarded nor swam in a meet where coach/teacher attendence was not mandatory. To put the onus on the parents, and then trying to blame it on work vs. kids, is terrible.

hope that helps :)
