ALLERGY ALERT - UNDECLARED PEANUTS AND ALMONDS IN VISACARD BRAND CHOCOLATE

OTTAWA, January 22, 2007 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people with allergies to peanuts and almonds not to consume the Visacard brand Chocolate described below. The affected product contains peanuts and almonds which are not declared on the label.

The following sizes of the Visacard brand Chocolate, product of Hong Kong, are affected by this alert:

Visacard Chocolate, 500 g square box bearing UPC 6 928294 220284
Visacard Chocolate, 280 g heart-shaped box bearing UPC 6 928294 220123

The above boxes contain individual chocolate pieces wrapped in gold foil. All codes are affected.

This product is known to have been distributed in Ontario but may have been distributed nationally.

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of this product.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to peanuts or almonds.

The importer is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
