ALLERGY ALERT - UNDECLARED MILK PROTEIN IN GREAT VALUE BRAND WHITE CAKE MIX

OTTAWA, February 19, 2007 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Wal-Mart Canada Corp. are warning people with allergies to milk protein not to consume Great Value brand White Cake mix. The affected product may contain milk protein which is not declared on the label.

The affected product, Great Value brand White Cake mix, a product of U.S.A, is sold in a 524 g box bearing the UPC 6 81131 81151 4. All codes are affected by this alert.

This product has been distributed nationally.

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of this product.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to milk protein.

The distributor, Wal-Mart Canada Corp., Mississauga, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

Oh, this is the sort of thing that makes me just want to stick to making cakes from scratch.

Husband: no allergies
Me: allergies to some tree that flowers in May
Cat: allergic to beef, pork and lamb

The warning has been expanded to Value Mart's other cake mixes and brownie mixes. Wal-Mart Canada Corp is voluntarily recalling the products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Wal-Mart Canada Corp. are warning people with allergies to milk protein not to consume certain Great Value brand cake and brownie mixes described below. These mixes may contain milk protein which is not declared on the label.

The following Great Value brand cake and brownie mixes are affected by this alert.

1. Chocolate Cake Mix, 524 g, UPC 6 81131 81149 1.
2. Devils Food Cake Mix, 524 g, UPC 6 81131 81152 1.
3. Fudge Brownie Mix, 454 g, UPC 6 81131 81153 8.
4. Yellow Cake Mix, 524 g, UPC 6 81131 81150 7.

All codes of these products are affected by this alert. These products made in U.S.A. were distributed nationally.
