An AL reader and forum member from the Vancouver area has written to us that her daughter had an allergic reaction to a trace amount of dairy in a particular lot of So Good Creamy Vanilla Frozen Dessert.

The SoyaWorld company wrote to confirm to her that a test of her container from the lot dated G835004110 did come back from testing as "weakly positive for the presence of dairy protein". As the product is labelled "dairy free", the representative said the company has asked distributors and retailers to remove this product from the shelves, and it has notified the Can. Food Inspection Agency.

FYI, the member tells us her daughter is now fine.

It should be noted that the company person "deeply" apologized for the dairy traces and added that: "In the 6 years that we have been producing this product, we have never had issues concerning the presence of milk protein in our products so this is a surprise to us."

Gwen of AL will be asking the CFIA if it has any more information on this voluntary recall.

Good to see CFIA got this out.

Thanks to our forum member for taking the trouble to keep the container, contact the company and CFIA. She may have spared someone else from a reaction.

Prior to the alert from CFIA, I had e-mailed the makers of So Good Creamy Frozen Desserts and this is their response.
Quote:
SoyaWorld has recalled one lot of So Good brand Creamy Vanilla Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert sold in a 946mL carton due to an undeclared milk protein allergen being detected. This may affect consumers who have dairy allergies or intolerances.

This recall only affects products bearing UPC 6 26027 00410 6, and a 10-digit lot code beginning with “G8350” located on the rim of the lid. The product was distributed to stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The recall was initiated after a customer reported an allergic reaction. SoyaWorld retrieved and tested the remnants of this product and confirmed a positive test for milk protein. We located 2 other samples of this code at one store and submitted those for testing as well. Upon confirming that they were positive for milk protein, we notified the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and submitted these samples to them to determine the precise degree to which they contained milk protein. At the same time, we contacted our ingredient manufacturers to determine whether the contamination was ingredient-based or plant-related. No positive results were found with any of the ingredients.

The CFIA’s tests subsequently revealed that the positive samples tested well under 10 PPM, however, as a precaution; they decided to issue a formal alert. The CFIA was appreciative of the fact that Soyaworld had already issued a product withdrawal; however, the product warning was justified by the need to alert consumers who might already have the product in their freezers.

We are thoroughly investigating the situation, and have determined that our long-standing co-manufacturing partner, in this instance, produced So Good Creamy Vanilla Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert on the same day as they were manufacturing dairy–based products. While their strict cleaning protocols, consisting of multiple stages of rinsing, washing and sanitizing, executed at precise temperatures and time intervals should prevent such an incident, trace amounts of milk protein did appear in this particular lot of So Good Frozen Desserts. It is also worth noting that a standard test to detect milk protein is routinely conducted at start-up of each run, and in this instance, the test was negative. We are reviewing manufacturing policies with this partner to ensure cross-contamination does not occur in the future. 24 random samples of from production runs since then have all been checked and confirmed as being negative for dairy.

Please note that we have never encountered a dairy protein issue in the six years they have produced our frozen desserts.

The CFIA also conducted an inspection and review of the manufacturing facility and their practices, concluding that they were sound; the CFIA recommended that they avoid running our production alongside dairy production in the future to minimize the chance for cross-contamination.

We take this situation very seriously and regret the worry that this incident has caused your patrons. We hope to regain their confidence and trust in our So Good products as we move forward.

Regards,

Thanks Susan.

I guess there's no real answer here to know what went wrong - since they say the plant's test results on the recalled lot had been negative.
