I recieved this email from a friend today.

Quote:
CAUTION: 650g Milk Chocolate Hearts by Regal Confections UPC 56797 56090

I just purchased two 650g bags of milk chocolate hearts at my local Walmart.

I read the ingredients on one bag only - there was no caution of any kind - and Regal is a brand I have bought before.

I even suggested to another mom of a non allergic child, who was buying treats for her son's class - that these treats were safe for school.

When I got home, I read the bag again and there was a caution that says,

"May contain traces of Peanuts and/or Wheat and/or Coconut Oil".

I though I must be losing my mind - how could I make such a big mistake...

It turns out - one bag has the caution - one bag does not...same product - same UPC code.

Until I can get to the bottom of this, please pass this information onto your families.

Thank you,

Debbie Bruce

Today I spoke to Regal Confections and was advised the two packages of chocolate hearts are made at separate plants and the labelling is correct.

I explained to Regal - while I appreciate labelling is voluntary - and we are grateful they have chosen to list the cautionary statement - I am concerned if someone buys just the bag without the caution - they are likely to assume all of the chocolate hearts are ok. This could especially be a problem at school if the hearts are taken out of the bag and just put in a bowl.

Regal was very understanding, but there is not much they can do at this point.

I am going to talk to my local Wal Mart to see if they would consider separating the product.

Regal's contact information is 1 800 363 4434 Nancy at extension 114.

I had a similar problem this past Halloween which I detailed on my blog in this post http://www.allergymom.ca/1/post/2009/10 ... nsafe.html

Essentially, it depends on where the candy is packaged. In our case, the containers we purchased at Walmart were from a packaging facility in Montreal which was allergen free upon calling to confirm. The containers purchased at Sobeys and other grocery stores were packaged in a facility in Wolfville, NS and were not allergen free. I agree with you, it is so confusing and sometimes misleading.

I just call anyway. Actually, we just go to the store and call the different companies while we are inspecting different candy containers.
