I have a strong sunflower-seed allergy and a mild flax-seed allergy. Because of my other restrictions and health concerns, I tend to buy natural/health food products. My choices in health foods are becoming limited, as manufacturers add sunflower and flax seeds & oils to everything they can. (I hear these are healthy foods for everyone else!)

Can anyone recommend an efficient and effective way to advocate for myself? I mentioned this to my health-food store's suggestion box (and got no response) but perhaps there is a way to make manufacturers aware of the less-common allergens. It would also be great if they specified exactly which oil they use, not "sunflower or safflower or ... oil".

One thing that I do is write to companies that have a product you can use and thank them for making a product that you can use. This lets them know that the product has a niche and I jope they would think twice about changing it to add the allergen.

You might also write to a few companies and ask them to direct you towards products that do not contain your allergens.

Ask them if you can sahre this information on this national website. That lets them know that there is a market. :)

Wow, I thought I was the only one with a flax problem! I remember when I got the diagnosis, I had a suspicion it was flax, then I looked it up on-line and it said flax allergy is extremely rare and it's highly unlikely I would have it. As soon as I read that, I knew it was the problem because it would so be like me to get the really obscure one :)

Fwiw my allergist told me he has never seen a case of flax allergy until me, but he thinks that's because it is a new food for many people. He thinks as exposure to it increases, incidences of allergy will increase too. Anecdotally, I think this is true as I have seen message board posts about it elsewhere :)

I too am dismayed that they are gunking up all sorts of otherwise acceptable (for me) foods with a completely unnecessary contaminant. And I think we have to be careful about adding one food to so many things, no matter what the food is, because the more people get exposed to something, the more likely allergies are a problem with them. Just look at the explosion in recent years of corn allergy! Corn is such a hard one to avoid (I speak from experience) and now we are going down that road with flax too...
