Today is Sabrina Shannon's Birthday. She would have been 24 years old. You might know her name from Ontario's Bill 3 AKA Sabrina's Law. This law spells out who is responsible and for what when it comes to managing anaphylaxis in all Ontario schools.

It isn't:
-The Peanut Law-Sabrina died from a reaction to milk products
-Only applicable to elementary schools-was in grade 8 and attending high school

Sabrina was aware of her allergies and took them seriously. She produced a CBC radio documentary with the help of her aunt when she was almost 10 years old.

You can read more about Sabrina, the law that was named after her and hear her documentary here: http://allergicliving.com/2010/09/15/sa ... utty-tale/

Thanks for this post, Susan.

Sabrina's story is so powerful, and the law has been tremendously important, to the cause of consistent and appropriate allergy accommodations.

For those in Ontario, see this article about how Sabrina's Law is currently in question: http://allergicliving.com/2014/05/22/pr ... -question/

Sabrina's documentary was one of the first things we discovered when researching anaphylaxis. Her story really taught us about cross-contamination.

We have had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina's mom twice --- a true advocate for the safety of students living with the risk of anaphylaxis.

You're so right - Sara is a wonderful lady.

It takes real courage to speak out and advocate as she did (and at first, while still in the early stages of grief). She promised Sabrina she would try to prevent more tragedies. Her work has had a profound impact.

She has been true to her word and has travelled all over Ontario and beyond. Whenever and wherever her presence is needed to further the message.

It took me several meetings before I could get the lump out of my throat to tell her how much I appreciated all that she has done to protect my daughter.
