Has anyone had any experience with the gradual oral introduction of allergens (under medical supervision) as an attempt to desensitize the immune system?

In the US, I gather the standard line is that allergy shots are useless for food allergy, but I've read that there is some promising research in Europe utilizing purified allergens administered orally in tiny but progressively larger doses.

This makes so much sense to me (for wheat or other food allergies-- not necessarily for celiac disease); I wonder if anyone here has tried it.
