Talking Allergies

Hi,

I just bought a box of Old Dutch chips that included plain and ketchup chips. I was wondering if anyone else has fed the ketchup chips to their dairy allergic children. It does not appear to have any milk ingredients listed on the box, and there is no allergen statement. I am not 100% comfortable as I don't know Old Dutch's policy on listing allergens in their ingredients.

I don't eat potato chips, but I would hesitate because they make flavours with dairy in them. I would call the company to be certain, but that would make me wary before contacting them.

Sorry, I can't help. We just buy the plain chips.

I actually did call Old Dutch and was told the the ketchup chips don't contain any dairy. They are produced on a line that has dairy in other chips, however, she assured me that they follow stringent cleaning procedures between production of each type of chip.

My son has an anaphylactic dairy allergy, and he always eats ketchup chips! Both Old Dutch and Lays are fine. He loves them

I know for a fact that there is lactose in ketchup chips. My son is also ana to dairy and he only eats the regular flavor.

I don't have the label in front of me, but through trial and error before we realized how serious his allergy was, we learned that lactose was safe for him, and he was specifically allergic to casein protein. He has never reacted to anything with lactose in it, but one tiny shred of soya cheese put him in full allergy mode!

With a milk allergy, wouldn't you still have to be careful with products containing lactose (milk sugar)- how can you be sure that there isn't some milk protein (i.e. casein) in the product as well? Can manufacturers separate all milk protein from lactose? Do they test to see if the product is milk protein free? I would guess that once manufacturers put milk on the label in any form (lactose, whey, casein) that they do not worry about whether there is one or more milk components in it or cross contamination with other components (casein with lactose). Just my own thinking.

It's my understanding that milk is made up of more than one protein. It is possible to be allergic to one or more of these proteins. If it works for you, Momtobunches, then that's great. Our daughter only eats the plain because we too are avoiding all milk products.

Some of her anaphylaxic reactions have been to milk.
