Talking Allergies

My daughter's SK teacher would like to do a class discussion regarding my daughter's PA/TNA. Does anybody know where I could find some educational material that would be appropriate for her age group?

I'm very fortunate to have my daughter go to a school where they understand the dangers of her allergies and are willing to educate others to provide a safe environment for her and others like her.

Anaphylaxis Canada has a great section for kids under Safe4kids or the Schools and Camps section, with lesson plans that are age appropriate. There are lots of books available too, The Alexander the Elephant ones have a video and different books for different subjects eg - birthdays, feild trips etc. They are really good and would work well for 4 year olds. They are available throught AAIA, AC. Probably FAAN would have lots of resources. A few years ago I downloaded their "Protect A Life" brochure and certificates that are designed for school aged kids and I have used those a lot.

Thanks for the information. I printed out the lesson plan for kindergarten children and will pass it along to my daughter's teacher.

Hi Everyone...I have been searching for some good resources to pass forward around our school. I guess it is odd to me but, the Safe4Kids.com seems mostly to have a bunch of sponsored ads. Please excuse me if I am wrong, but each search I did gave me a big list of ads. I thought it was worth letting everyone know. Perhaps the good info is buried, and I just missed it.

If you go on the PBS (public broadcasting system) and go to the Authur site, they have a section for teachers and they have a lesson plan about Binky, who has an allergy to peanuts. It is a really well done resource, and kids relate really well as they already know Binky.

I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any resources that would be good for high school and middle school students? It seems a bit harder to find age appropriate resources for this age yet it seems the most necessary. I'm thinking for the anaphylactic student and peers.

Try "Food Allergies in the Real World" at http://www.faanteen.org/ - from the US advocacy group Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN).

I haven't had a chance to check it out much, so please do report back what you think of it - and more importantly, what the teens in your life think of it!
