Talking Allergies

I just found out today that my daughter has outgrown her egg and dairy allergy and we can start introducing them in small amounts - ! Unfortunately she is now allergic to sesame I am looking for whole wheat sesame bread (in Ottawa) and from reading the posts, it sounds like I can get the POM ultra-soft whole wheat at Loeb. There was also mention of a possible Dempsters bread, but I was not sure if it was safe. Can someone clarify if Dempsters makes a whole wheat bread with no sesame warning? Thanks.

Yes - Dempsters makes one but it is an ultra soft THICK loaf and so my kids are not as into it. We prefer the POM. I buy a bunch at a time and freeze them. Dempsters does make TWO white loaves that are safe - one thisnk and the other is in a foil covered bag. Hard to read the white text, but no warning!

(I also live in Ottawa, West end and can find POM at Loeb and Dempsters at Sobey's. When I spoke to Loblaws about selling a safe bread they haughtily informed me that they don't sell Dempsters! )

The POM bread is good. I recently had a friend buy some for me since it's not available where we are.

With regards to Dempsters - I'm pretty sure it's just the one white bread that doesn't have the warning. But it's white - so if you're looking for whole wheat - then POM is the way to go.

And if you're near a Sobey's Treasure Mills is their supplier of their "brand name" breads. They have a sesame warning on the bag that it goes in since Sobey's can't gaurantee it hasn't come in contact with any of the allergens, but you could always ask to get a fresh bread out of the box! They have a really nice multigrain bread - has sunflower seeds though.

Thanks for the update on the bread, I will check it out. Does anyone know of any bagels that don't contain the sesame warning on them? My older daughter is sad she can't have her sesame bagels for breakfast anymore.

Except for homemade we have yet to find safe bagels, hotdog buns or hamburger buns. If you have a bread maker, making bagels is actually pretty easy. BUT - if you find any that are safe you'll have to share the info:)

Scott, Welcome to the forum! That's great news about your daughter no longer being allergic to egg and dairy. That will open so many new doors for food. However, I am sorry to hear that she is allergic to sesame. You'll have to read through everything related to sesame on this forum - there is quite a lot of good information. I can't say enough good things about owning a breadmaker. You can make so many delicious bread recipes that you will KNOW are safe for your daughter. It takes a bit of adjustment to making bread for your family on a regular basis, but many of us with sesame allergy on this forum have been doing it for quite some time, and it does get easier. I own a Black & Decker breadmaker (I bought it at Walmart for under $100), and it makes a 2 lb loaf. For the most part, I find our family of 4 will go through the 2 lb loaf over a couple of days (of course, this varies - sometimes it's only 1 day, or as many as 3 days). I will prepare, in advance, 12 containers filled with all the dry ingredients (flour, skim milk powder, salt, sugar) so it only takes a couple of minutes to throw a loaf into the breadmaker. Having said this, I am always thrilled to learn of a sesame-free bread (or bread-like product). We buy pitas from Costco, Dempsters pouches from Walmart or Longos, Dimpflmeier rye bread (I buy this at our local Superstore, but I've seen it elsewhere, Dempsters white enriched bread in the silver foil (I'm not a big fan of this bread, but it's better than nothing in a pinch!) There are several crackers we buy that are sesame-free as well: Stoned Wheat Thins, Triscuits, Premium Plus crackers, Christie Sociables, Christie Wheat Thins, Christie Bacon Dipper crackers, Ryvita Snackbread (kind of crunchy toast), and I found some of those little mini toasts (for canapes) that are safe made by Paris Toasts.

I wish you well in dealing with sesame allergy. It's challenging (but aren't they all), but you will adapt!

I was at Loeb on the weekend and saw that Dempsters has a whole wheat bread that did not have the sesame warning. I haven't called, but they have sesame warnings on all other breads. Something to look into. It was a WW bread that was not in the silver package. I can't remember the name or anything - I just remembered the brand so I could go take a closer look at it another time:) Could we really have another options?!?! LOL

Edited to add - I was just rereading to find a post about the baguettes someone posted and noticed that this Dempsters bread was already mentioned. It was just the first time I had actually seen it.

Those of us with sesame concerns are just inundated with choices now. LOL
There are FIVE white bread choices and TWO whole wheat, all Dempster's. Everytime I see the Canda Bread guy I tell him how wonderful he is and ask could he please make hot dog and hamburger buns!
