I was still working on what my problem was with the Japanese food I had last week, when I was out with a friend today. We were at the grocery store and she picked up one of those to-go sushi lunch things. I was skimming the ingredients and I saw high-fructose corn syrup in there! Is that a standard ingredient in sushi? It could be that was what I reacted to. Now I am worried because I thought sushi would be safe for me since I always get the vegetarian kind and it's just rice and vegetables (or so I thought).

Sushi rice is usually flavoured with sweet rice vinegar. I guess some places will use the (cheaper) pre-made kind instead of using plain rice vinegar mixed with sugar.

you'd most likely have more luck going out for sushi, because the bento box places probably need to add more stuff to make it have slightly longer shelf life whereas most of the time if you go to a sushi place it's made fresh even right in front of you!
