ALLERGY ALERT - UNDECLARED HAZELNUT IN GRODER FONDENTE AND AL LATTE SWEETENED WITH MALTITOL

OTTAWA, June 1, 2007 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Excelsior Foods Inc. are warning people with allergies to hazelnut not to consume the Groder Fondente and Al Latte Sweetened with Maltitol products described below. The affected products may contain hazelnut which is not declared on the label.

The following products are affected by this alert:

1. Groder Fondente, Bitter Chocolate Sweetened with Maltitol (Fondente Surrogato Di Cioccolato Dolcificato Con Maltitolo), sold as a 75 g bar bearing UPC 8 008429 023015. Only the Best before date 13/09 2007 is affected by this alert.

2. Groder Al Latte, Milk Chocolate Sweetened with Maltitol (Al Latte Surrogato Di Cioccolato Dolcificado con Maltitolo), sold as a 75 g bar bearing UPC 8 008429 023008. Only the Best before date 13/05/2007 is affected by this alert.

These products have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to hazelnut.

The importer, Excelsior Foods Inc, Toronto, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
