Talking Allergies

I would like to add some color to my cakes for my 4year old allergic son. He has allergies to peanut, nuts and fish. Does anyone know of a cake decorating icing that is safe?

You can naturally dye your own icing. I make icing and then use pureed fruits mixed in to 'dye' them.

We had a thread about birthday cakes a while back and I believe that there is a recipe on it for decorator icing.

My guys have both recently started 'reacting' to food dyes (I'm thinking sensitivity, not a true allergy...it seems to affect their behaviour, making them hyper, irritable etc.). So we're avoiding food dyes, which is no big deal, because we only had things with colouring very rarely anyway. But I would still like to be able to make coloured icings for cake decorating from time to time.

Which fruit purees do you use for each colours? Do you use them raw or cooked? And does the colour last well?

Me too, me too laurie15! I'd love to know how you do it so that your icing's consistency isn't affected.

I tend to make the icing a little stiffer, then stir it in. I like to use my homemade jams, and swirl it in, too (it gives a nice affect!)

I tend to use fruit that has been cooked, or atleast softened... Sometimes I steam them a bit, puree them, then just keep them in the fridge for quick jams and spreads.
