Talking Allergies

So... my DD was home from school on Friday since my DH and I had the day off. the JK teacher called and asked if we could come in to pick up gifts so I made the special trip out (lucky girl!). Anyway, there is a kid who has been with my DD since the "infant room". They KNOW our allergy situation, have been in our home and to 3 of our Bday parties. Wow am I glad I popped in without DD. This family had given my DD one of those plastic candy canes filled with MILK CHOCOLATE candies!!!! and believe it or not the label said "CONTAINS TRACE SESAME AND EGG"!!!!!!!!! It isn't that they didn't notice, there was a tag attached with the To/From and on the back it said something like "we know it isn't suitable but ran out at the last minute...". C'mon. So, instead of excluding a kid (or buying a $1.00 pkg of stickers) they put this IN HER CUBBY not knowing that we'd kept her home. I'm sick. I'm mad. and sadly I know it is far from the last time...

This is all the more reason to stick to the rule "Don't eat anything that Mommy or Daddy hasn't OK'd.".
Lately it seems that people are all about geting that feel good vibe from giving even if it is at a risk to the gift recipient. What ever happened to the the thought that counts?

Allergic to tons and tons of food as well as perfumes, scented air sprays and cleaners. Hubby to Fish, ds #2 Shellfish, youngest to Eggplant, potato, Caesin, Raw Tomato & spinach.

Maybe we need to market some thank you cards.
You know, something along the lines of:
"Thank you for your thoughtful gift.
It means a lot to me that you took the time to find the perfect gift to rub nose on the fact that I have deadly allergies. The fact that you are getting this card indicates that I am aware of just how inconciderate, obtuse you are when it comes to my allergies and I checked before eating it.
In the future, please concider giving to charity on my behalf."

I would be upset too, renie. I think it must be so hurtful to the allergic child. They must get a message that they can't even trust their friends. Good thing she stayed home.

We have also had this happen many times with our son (and our daughter)... it is quite frightening (for those dealing with food allergies). Our only defense has been to teach (and repeat and repeat and repeat again) the important message that ONLY food given to our son by mommy or daddy is safe. Do NOT eat anything from anyone else without first asking. And, unfortunately, Renie, you're right... this is going to happen again. I feel very sad in saying this, but, unfortunately, it is true. We must be hyper-vigilant when it comes to this... it is the only way to keep our children safe.

11 yr old son: allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, fish, sesame, sunflower, mustard, poppy seeds, green peas, some fruits, instructed to avoid all other legumes (except soy & green beans), pollen, cats, horses

that's horrible, and really sad. and scary too, as i've said in many, many posts i don't know how you do it.

being in a creative mood here's my two cents on the card;

i wasn't aware that Self Centred was the new spirt of giving!
(picture of some fashionista clubbing santa, rudolph, frosty or whoever)

in that spirt stay out of my hospital room!

Wow - that's really horrible.
I'd almost want to put it back in the kids cubby that gave it to you with a note saying - Thank you, but as you know we don't allow DD's allergens in our house.

And I LOVE Etsy! And have ordered cards from Carol Lee Designs before. LOL They're awesome. I bet she'd take custom orders for something like that...
