Talking Allergies

Up until recently, I purchased the OvenJoy bread at Safeway...it had no milk or egg ingredients in it, and was made in a safe facility. Now, this product contains a warning about the facility where it's manufactured. I called Safeway, and they said that they recently switched suppliers ( ). Once again, I felt defeated by the fact that I was on to something that worked for my family....and once again it is taken away...

Does anyone else know of any commerical bread products out there that are safe for milk and egg allergic? I also avoid products with nut warnings, as I don't believe they are necessarily safe for young children that haven't been tested for this yet....

Please let me know if someone else has come across some safe bread!

Dempsters signature whole wheat is available at walmart. My local shoppers drug mart also has it (but is often out of stock), and safe dempsters hot dog and hamburger buns.

We buy Dempsters Whole Wheat "Soft Slice". The regular slice and thick slice are both egg, milk and nut free (I've called the supplier). You can find it at Dominion, Walmart and Highland Farms.

For buns we buy Kaiser buns made from the "Toronto Bread Company" They do not contain egg or milk or nuts. I buy these at Highland Farms. We use these as hamburger buns as well.

They do both contain a warning "May contain Sesame Seeds" .

I've never been able to find the Dempsters Hamburger or hot dog buns. What supermarket do you buy them in?

OK everyone, I went out looking for the signature buns you all mentioned but I couldn't find them. Every Dempsters hot dog/hamburger bun package contained a warning "may contain milk products, eggs".

Help! Please describe the package as I need visuals!

The buns are "SMART", it's the bread that is "SIGNATURE". The smart buns come in silver foil packaging.

I found the buns but they do contain a "warning". Do you buy them with the warning?

The buns I buy do not have a warning for milk or egg. I had phoned and cross-contamination was not an issue. I have not bought any buns for a few months...hopefully they have not changed things.

I also have baeen looking for the buns in Edmonton and could not find them. I called the factory here in Edmonton where they are made and they have been discontinued. If anyone finds an alternative please post.

I thought I would bump this question as we are now in full swing of BBQ season.
What type of hamburger/hotdog bun do you use?

In Ottawa, we buy Betty brand buns (we are avoiding egg/dairy/peanut/all tree nuts/ beans and peas-we don't purchase "may contains").

Our grocery store doesn't sell the Dempster's hamburg and hot dog buns, so we've been using the President's Choice Whole Grain White Buns (both hamburg and hot dog). They are the thin buns, look kind of like pita bread, but they are really good. Taste much better than a regular bun.

I have found Dempster's Deluxe hot dog and hamburger buns at Walmart and Sobey's. They have sesame seeds and they are white, but they have not allergy warning re milk.

Just thought I'd mention an alternate for those needing to avoid sesame... if we don't have any of our homemade buns, we will sometimes use tortillas for hot dogs (so, it's like a hot dog "wrap" - my son prefers these over the bun anyway), and for hamburgers, we will use Dempsters sandwich pouches (they are like a pita). We certainly have to become innovative when dealing with food allergies!
